Starting a new website. Buy a recently expired domain

Are you planning to start a new website?

Starting a new website is an exciting time; picking a domain name, sorting out the design etc. Most users starting a new website will also purchase a brand new domain  name. However purchasing a previously unregistered domain name will often mean you will find it hard to get a good search engine ranking from day one.

Two of the most important factors to help gain a good search engine ranking are; quality back links and the age of your domain name. The age of your domain name is a often overlooked factor when taking part in the battle for a good search engine ranking. Major search engines strongly favour older more established websites. Therefore when you first setup your website, because you have got a brand new domain name, this will work against you.

Purchase a recently expired domain

One persons rubbish is often of value to someone else, this is the case with domain names. Domain auction websites are a great place for you to pickup a previously expired or no longer wanted domain name. If you decide to go down this route, you are not registering your domain name from scratch, you will be taking over ownership from someone else. Therefore the reigtration date on a whois lookup will be older. Using a recently expired domain name can be a great solution

The downside …

As with most decisions, there is usually a downside. Going via a domain auction to pickup a recently expired domain name is likely to cost you a little more   – you may decide the SEO benefits may outweigh the cost?

Also, you will need to consider the history of the domain name you are buying. The previous owner might have been banned by a search engine? or have negative poor quality backlinks. Taking over ownership will mean you will also inherit this.

If you do your homework, you could pickup a bargain that will give your new website a quick traffic boost – well worth considering when establishing a new site.

What are your views and experiences when purchasing a domain name? Have you ever used a domain auction site? Share your experiences.

Google quit windows and join the Apple camp

MacRumors  have reported that Google have decided  phase out the use of Windows computers for their staff.

This move comes after news in January that hackers successfully broke into Google via exploiting a security venerability inside Windows Explorer.

“We’re not doing any more Windows. It is a security effort,” said one Google employee.

Instead, Google are giving new members of staff the option between Mac or Linux based computers. Microsoft Windows has always been seen as the operating system for business. With reports such as this  - will there be are other big hitters moving over to the Mac camp?

Run Linux and windows side by side, a free solution

If you have read this blog before you would have noticed several of our Windows rants.

In our office our file server is about to give up the ghost, so it is time to upgrade before the server finally dies. At the moment our file server is running windows 2003, it does the job however we would like to move away from Windows and replace it with a Linux box which would offer us greater stability.

This causes a problem ….

The file server is also used by our website development team to test websites in various versions of IE before we launch them (IE tester is a great free program for this). With Linux we would be unable to test websites in IE/ various other applications which require a windows platform for testing. Yesterday we came across a great free solution which lets us run our Linux file server and windows together.

Our file server will run a Linux distribution, most likely Ubuntu. On top of that we found a great open source app called Virtual Box. Virtual Box enables you to install several virtual operating systems on top of your base operating system. So in our case, Linux will provide the base operating system for the server, and a Windows XP install will be made ontop of  the Linux OS which will provide us with testing capabilities.

There are several other free virtual operating system/VPS alternatives out there, Xen, WMware. However Virtual box is a great alternative to run Linux and windows side by side.

For more information enter ‘virtualbox’ into your favourite search engine
